The texture and toughness of wood can absorb the kinetic energy of bullets, reducing the chance of ricochet. A common method is to directly cover the surface of the concrete wall with wood. Although wood can deteriorate or fall off due to environmental factors and usage over time, its lifespan can be extended through pressure treatment and painting. Regular maintenance and replacement of the wooden surface can reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by stray bullets. Replacing the wooden panels allows them to be recycled or made into biomass materials, reducing environmental impact.
Common wood species used for bulletproof walls include European spruce, North American hemlock, Douglas fir, and Southern yellow pine.
