A shooting range can be divided into two main types: indoor and outdoor. The suitable training programs and types of firearms differ for each. Apart from the shooting targets, the most important aspect is the installation of bulletproof facilities to ensure the safety of people both inside and outside the range. These facilities are typically installed on the walls of the range and directly behind the targets to prevent bullets that miss the target from ricocheting back into the shooting area or flying out of the range, thereby avoiding accidents. Common materials used for bulletproof walls include wooden bulletproof walls, sandbags, old tires, rubber, or composite materials.

Why is wood added to the surface of bulletproof walls?
The texture and toughness of wood can absorb the kinetic energy of bullets, reducing the chance of ricochet. A common method is to directly cover the surface of the concrete wall with wood. Although wood can deteriorate or fall off due to environmental factors and usage over time, its lifespan can be extended through pressure treatment and painting. Regular maintenance and replacement of the wooden surface can reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by stray bullets. Replacing the wooden panels allows them to be recycled or made into biomass materials, reducing environmental impact.

Common wood species used for bulletproof walls include European spruce, North American hemlock, Douglas fir, and Southern yellow pine.
