Woodwork as the Highlight of the Space
The woodwork structure of MUJI BASE OIKAWA stands as a major highlight of this distinctive guesthouse. Using refined and minimalist woodworking techniques, MUJI has preserved the original wooden elements of the school building while incorporating innovative designs. This not only imbues the space with a warm, inviting texture but also creates a unique atmosphere where traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modern design seamlessly merge.
MUJI's "Good Product Project" and Local Revitalization
In recent years, MUJI has been promoting its "Good Product Project," aiming to "realize a better life and society." Through this initiative, MUJI engages with local communities to share common challenges and values, launching several local revitalization efforts. The "MUJI BASE" project is part of this mission, transforming idle buildings and showcasing the charm of wood into community hubs. This allows guests to experience a lifestyle closer to the daily rhythm of local life and discover the charm of the area.
Located in the picturesque Yoro Valley of Chiba Prefecture, MUJI BASE OIKAWA is the third addition to this series of guesthouses. The area is known for its breathtaking seasonal scenery and magnificent highland mountains, especially the stunning autumn foliage, making it an ideal location for hiking and sightseeing. The guesthouse is housed in the old Oikawa Elementary School, which was closed due to declining student numbers.
In the renovation process, MUJI has preserved the humble and warm atmosphere of the original school, while creatively incorporating elements such as turning old art room desks into dining tables, repurposing old instruments as light fixtures, and transforming rackets into wall mirrors—infusing the space with a playful and surprising charm.
A True Connection with the Community
In addition to the accommodation spaces, MUJI BASE OIKAWA also features a MUJI store, shared workspaces, a coin-operated laundry, and a library, all available for use by both guests and local residents. This not only offers a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city but also provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with the local community and truly immerse themselves in the daily life of the area.
Revitalizing Old Buildings with Woodwork Design Aesthetics
Through its woodwork design aesthetics and the creative repurposing of idle spaces, the MUJI BASE brand has successfully transformed old buildings into "local cultural experience hubs." The project breathes new life into these old structures, allowing guests to escape the urban grind and enjoy an experience that coexists with nature, while rediscovering the beauty of local culture.
