A Commitment to Coexisting With the Land
In recent years, MUJI has used various unique store formats in Taiwan to showcase multi-layered approaches, from creating a specific "spatial atmosphere" to using "sustainable local materials." When we walk into these familiar stores and feel the wooden tables and chairs, see the natural walls, and experience the open community spaces, we sense not just the beauty of the design, but also a commitment to coexisting with the land.
The Inspiration: From Bare Wood Structures to Bamboo Details
MUJI excels at using unpainted, warm-toned wood and bamboo elements to create a -breathable, natural spatial language. For example, stores like the Hsinchu Big City and Taichung LaLaport North Building locations continue the "Open MUJI" spirit. They combine wooden tables, chairs, and flexible, movable furniture with local books, farmers' markets, and workshops, turning the space into a hub for community co-creation.
This light-wood decor is not just for show; it serves as a foundational base that residents can share and build upon. The use of bamboo in small storage items and display details echoes MUJI’s long-term efforts to revitalize Taiwan's bamboo forests and develop bamboo products.

Local Upgrades: From Community Sharing to Showcasing Domestic Timber
If "Open MUJI" showcases "co-creation between people," then the Songgao Flagship Store and Yulon City Store are prime examples of bringing local forest resources and recycled materials into the city.
-
MUJI Taipei Songgao Flagship Store: Based on the concept of "Re," the clothing section features walls made from "Letu" (soil from reservoir silt). The general goods area uses sound-absorbing walls made of wood wool cement. The tables in the dining area are made from "salvaged wood" (Taiwan Red Pine and Hemlock) from the Dasyueshan Forest. Wood that was safely removed has been transformed into tabletops that carry the story of the forest's texture and history. The floor uses low-carbon terrazzo, and a large wall area is covered with red patterned tiles, allowing local cultural textures and recycled materials to coexist.
-
MUJI New Taipei Yulon City Store: Positioned as Taiwan’s first domestic timber demonstration store, this location collaborated with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture. It uses CAS and QR-code certified Taiwan thinning timber for its decor and display furniture. It also developed exclusive products like stationery with Alishan motifs and building blocks made from different Taiwanese woods, allowing customers to not only see but also take home a piece of domestic timber.

Wood × Life × People: A Warm Connection with bestwood's Commitment
From the community co-creation at Hsinchu Big City and Taichung LaLaport to the use of local materials at Taipei Songgao and New Taipei Yulon City, MUJI constantly reminds us that a truly good life is not just about the products we choose, but about the warm and honest relationship between materials and people.
