The Macallan Distillery’s Most Complex Timber Roof

The New Macallan Distillery: A Landscape of Nature and Craftsmanship
Set in the rolling hills of Scotland’s Speyside valley, the new Macallan Distillery stands as both a whisky production center and an architectural statement. Completed after three and a half years of construction and an investment of £140 million, the distillery blends natural topography, precision engineering, and sustainable design into one landmark of timber architecture.

A Roof that Extends the Landscape
Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the distillery’s most striking feature is its undulating roof. Supported by a timber grid made of more than 380,000 individual components, the curved structure flows seamlessly with the land. Layers of glulam beams and steel connectors create both strength and elegance, making the building appear as if it has naturally grown from the earth, in harmony with its surroundings.

Craftsmanship and Order Redefining a Whisky Space
At the heart of the distillery are 36 copper stills, precisely arranged beneath the soaring timber roof. The overlapping arches and lattice framework define the space, offering both openness and structural stability. Here, wood is not merely a decorative element but the primary structural material, processed with precision and assembled through modular methods. This integration of design and construction reflects the same craftsmanship found in whisky making.

Sustainability and Symbiosis with the Environment
Every detail of the building embodies the idea of coexisting with nature. The timber materials come from FSC-certified sustainable forests, the roof is covered with natural turf to minimize visual and carbon impact, and the embedded landscape design works together with the building’s high thermal performance. Natural light and efficient insulation reduce energy demand, making the distillery a model for low-carbon architecture.

A Brand Story Told Through Architecture
The Macallan distillery expresses over a century of brand heritage through contemporary architectural language. More than a functional production site, it is a space where architecture narrates the brand story, connecting tradition with innovation. By respecting the land while applying advanced building techniques and sustainability, the distillery becomes a tangible symbol of Macallan’s values and its dialogue with the world.
