In most cities, parking structures are often hidden underground, built with concrete and steel, and marked simply by a large “P” sign. While functional, they rarely leave a lasting impression. Yet parking facilities are not only essential to daily urban life but also part of the city’s overall landscape and planning.

What is The Timber House?
The Timber House, located in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn district, redefines the role of a parking structure. Designed with alternating layers of timber and recycled aluminum, it pays tribute to the city’s 19th-century history as a hub for timber storage and processing. Beyond offering parking, the project integrates green pedestrian walkways, retail shops, conference spaces, and a Kiss-n-Ride zone, enriching the district with more activity and convenience.
Trælasthuset
The six-story building spans 13,300 square meters and can accommodate around 430 vehicles. Nordhavn, once Copenhagen’s industrial free port, covers about two square kilometers. The very site where The Timber House now stands was historically used for timber transport and storage. Its Danish name, “Trælasthuset” directly translates to “the house that stores timber.”
Visual Design
Closely connected to its surroundings, the design features a sculptural façade inspired by stacks of sawn wood in sawmills. Combined with LED lighting and layered architectural details, the building presents a striking visual expression that recalls the area’s industrial heritage while shaping a modern urban identity.
