Logging or Reforestation?
When people think about forestry, many immediately imagine logging sites. Some even associate cutting trees with environmental destruction. In reality, most timber used today comes from commercial plantation forests—carefully planned and responsibly managed forest systems.
Commercial plantations are designed based on climate conditions, soil characteristics, and market demand. Suitable tree species are selected and planted across different zones for long-term management. Establishing and maintaining these forests is not a short-term effort; it is an investment that typically spans 20 to 30 years.
The Forest Rotation System
The core principle of commercial forestry is the forest rotation system. Forest land is divided into multiple sections, each managed according to different stages of tree growth. Some areas are newly planted, others are still growing, and some have reached maturity and are ready for harvest. After harvesting, the area is replanted.
This system works similarly to crop rotation in agriculture, but on a much longer timeline. It allows forests to maintain stable timber production while preserving soil quality and ecological balance. Through this cycle, forestry becomes part of a sustainable circular economy. Technology and Modern Reforestation
With the world losing approximately 70,000 square kilometers of forest each year, technology is becoming an important tool in reforestation. Many innovative companies are developing drone-based seeding systems that combine artificial intelligence and terrain analysis. From the air, drones can precisely release specially designed seed pods into selected locations. A single drone can plant more than 40,000 seeds per day, which is about 25 times faster than traditional planting methods, while reducing costs by up to 80%. These seed pods are carefully engineered. They contain nutrients, minerals, and beneficial microorganisms, along with protective coatings that improve germination rates. Each seed is recorded with a GPS location, allowing long-term tracking of tree growth and forest health.
Mechanical Tree Planting Systems
In Northern Europe, mechanized tree planting has already become common practice. Tractors equipped with automated planting systems combine soil preparation, seedling planting, and soil compaction into one process.
Under ideal conditions, these machines can plant over 40 seedlings per minute, reaching up to 150,000 trees in a single planting season.
The equipment precisely controls planting depth and spacing, improving survival rates and making it suitable for large-scale forestry operations. For mountainous terrain, excavator-based planting arms are also used, and robotic planting technologies are currently being tested for even more challenging landscapes.
The Environmental Value of Using Wood
What environmental value does tree growth create?
During their growth cycle, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping reduce global warming. Even after the wood is processed into products, the carbon remains stored within the material.
Forests can also be managed under certification systems such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), which ensures forests are managed legally and responsibly according to environmental and social standards.
When we choose FSC-certified timber, we are supporting sustainable forest management and responsible material sourcing.
The Commercial Forest System
Commercial forestry represents a strategic approach to sustainable resource management. With the support of modern technology, forestry continues to evolve alongside advancements in AI and data-driven management.
At bestwood, we place great importance on sourcing FSC-certified timber. We believe that professional wood selection begins with responsible forest management.
