Mukulungu (Autranella congolensis)

Mukulungu, often referred to as African Red Cherry, is native to the semi-deciduous forests of Central and West Africa. The trees grow tall and straight, often reaching heights of up to 50 meters and diameters of around 2 meters, shaped over decades or even centuries.
These regions offer rich soil and humid climates, creating ideal growing conditions. The wood is known for its deep red-brown heartwood, often combined with fine, darker streaks. When polished, it reveals a natural oily sheen—subtle yet refined, offering a premium visual character.

Mukulungu is a dense hardwood with a tight structure, high strength, and strong resistance to breakage. In real-world applications, its value is not only in appearance but in its performance and reliability.

It offers excellent resistance to decay, acids, and insect attack, making it highly suitable for demanding environments. Common uses include:

For this reason, it is widely used in Europe and Africa for marine and coastal applications, such as port structures, waterfront installations, and areas with continuous ground or water contact.

From Processing to Application

Although Mukulungu is heavy and dense, it can be processed effectively under proper conditions. Due to its hardness, pre-drilling is recommended during installation to prevent cracking.
Drying and dimensional control are also critical. Without proper preparation, even high-quality timber may face performance issues during use.
