African Red Hardwood

Mukulungu, often referred to as African Red Cherry, is native to the semi-deciduous forests of Central and West Africa. The trees grow tall and straight, often reaching heights of up to 50 meters and diameters of around 2 meters, shaped over decades or even centuries.
These regions offer rich soil and humid climates, creating ideal growing conditions. The wood is known for its deep red-brown heartwood, often combined with fine, darker streaks. When polished, it reveals a natural oily sheen—subtle yet refined, offering a premium visual character.

A Proven High-Performance Hardwood

Mukulungu is a dense hardwood with a tight structure, high strength, and strong resistance to breakage. In real-world applications, its value is not only in appearance but in its performance and reliability.

It offers excellent resistance to decay, acids, and insect attack, making it highly suitable for demanding environments. Common uses include:

  • Bridges and walkways
  • Railway sleepers
  • Structural components such as stairs and flooring

Its durability makes it a preferred material for heavy-duty and outdoor construction.

From Land to Marine Environments

In global timber classification, durability is often measured by exposure to biological risks in different environments. Under the European standard EN 335, wood is categorized from Class 1 to Class 5, with Class 5 representing the most severe exposure conditions.
Mukulungu is classified as Durability Class 5, meaning it can withstand extreme environments, including constant moisture and biological attack.
For this reason, it is widely used in Europe and Africa for marine and coastal applications, such as port structures, waterfront installations, and areas with continuous ground or water contact.

From Processing to Application

Although Mukulungu is heavy and dense, it can be processed effectively under proper conditions. Due to its hardness, pre-drilling is recommended during installation to prevent cracking.
Drying and dimensional control are also critical. Without proper preparation, even high-quality timber may face performance issues during use.
This is why Mukulungu requires not only careful material selection but also professional handling and processing to ensure optimal results.

High Performance Requires Professional Selection

High-performance timber comes with higher requirements—from sourcing and legality to drying processes and machining methods. Every step directly impacts the final outcome.
At bestwood, we provide FSC-certified timber along with professional material recommendations and customized processing services. From structural timber and decorative materials to specialty panels, we offer complete wood solutions tailored to your needs.
