April 22 – Earth Day

April 22 is celebrated each year as Earth Day. What started as an environmental education movement has grown into the world’s largest civic environmental event, with participation from over 1 billion people across 193 countries.
In the early stages of industrial development, pollution was often seen as a sign of progress. This perception began to change after the publication of the book Silent Spring, which raised awareness of the impact of chemicals on nature and human health. One of its key messages warned that if chemical misuse continued, spring could become silent—without birdsong.

A Planet Under Pressure

Today, extreme climate events are becoming more frequent and intense. Heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires are occurring at unprecedented levels.
For example:

  • In 2020, wildfires in California released more carbon dioxide than the state’s annual power plant emissions.
  • In 2023, Canada experienced wildfires that burned over 15 million hectares of forest.

Climate change is also disrupting ecosystems. Warmer winters allow pests to survive more easily, while drought weakens trees, making forests more vulnerable to disease and insect damage. At the same time, heavy rainfall and typhoons increase the risk of soil erosion, landslides, and flooding.

The Power of Forests

Forests play a critical role in protecting the planet. Through photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, convert it into nutrients, and release oxygen. On average, a single tree can absorb around 900 kilograms of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.
This carbon is stored within the wood itself and remains there even after processing.
Beyond carbon storage, forests provide multiple essential functions:

  • Regulating water systems and preserving water resources
  • Stabilizing climate by balancing temperature and humidity
  • Supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance
  • Offering cultural, recreational, and mental well-being value

Forests act as the Earth’s natural purification system, supporting life and maintaining environmental stability.

Bringing Forests into Everyday Life

Using wood can also be part of the solution. When forests are responsibly managed, trees are harvested and replanted in cycles. New trees continue to absorb carbon, creating a sustainable loop.
From construction and interior design to furniture and daily products, wood can store carbon for long periods—as long as it is not burned.
Compared to other materials, wood is renewable and requires less energy to produce, making it a more environmentally friendly choice.

Your Choice Matters

We may not be able to change the current state of the planet immediately, but we can influence the future through our choices.
Choosing wood products and supporting certified materials is one way to contribute to sustainable forest management. It ensures that harvested trees are replaced by new growth, continuing the cycle of carbon absorption.
Every material choice you make has an impact. And through these choices, the future is being shaped.
