The Story Behind Hemlock

North American Hemlock has grown along the Pacific Coast of North America for thousands of years and has long been an important resource for Indigenous communities.

Its bark was traditionally used to produce red dyes and decorative paint, while the inner bark was steamed and mixed with berries and fish oil to create nutritious food. The tree's sap and resin also played a role in traditional medicine, often blended with natural oils to make ointments for treating wounds and relieving colds.

Interestingly, the name Hemlock is shared with the poisonous plant historically associated with the death of Socrates. Despite the name, North American Hemlock is an entirely different species and is highly valued as a premium construction timber.

North American Hemlock

Native to the cool, humid forests of the Pacific Northwest, North American Hemlock thrives in regions with abundant rainfall. Under ideal growing conditions, these trees can live for more than a thousand years.

As the tree matures, lower branches naturally fall away in shaded forests, producing long, straight logs with relatively few knots. This characteristic makes Hemlock particularly attractive for construction and appearance-grade lumber.

Its wood ranges from creamy white to light brown, featuring a straight, even grain with minimal knots.

Occasionally, subtle purple tones or fine dark gray streaks appear near knots or annual growth rings, adding natural character without affecting overall appearance. The heartwood and sapwood are very similar in color, creating a clean and uniform look.

Characteristics of North American Hemlock

North American Hemlock combines an attractive appearance with dependable mechanical performance.

The wood offers excellent strength, hardness, and dimensional stability, making it one of the preferred softwoods for structural applications throughout North America. It is commonly specified for beams, roof decking, floor systems, and framing components.

Hemlock is also highly workable. It machines easily, sands smoothly, accepts paint and finishes well, and provides good nail-holding and gluing performance. Once properly dried, it maintains excellent dimensional stability with minimal shrinkage or warping, while offering good wear resistance over time.

These qualities make Hemlock an excellent choice for structural construction, interior finishing, and furniture manufacturing.

Applications of North American Hemlock

Because of its combination of strength and stability, North American Hemlock is widely used across both residential and commercial construction.
Typical structural applications include:

  • Beams and columns
  • Floor framing
  • Roof structures
  • Timber-frame buildings
  • Commercial and office construction

Beyond structural use, its smooth grain and warm natural color make it well suited for interior wall finishes, flooring, cabinetry, and furniture.
For exterior applications, Hemlock should be preservative-treated to improve resistance against weather and biological decay. Properly treated material delivers excellent durability and maintains its appearance with relatively low maintenance, even after prolonged outdoor exposure.
