Larch

When people think of conifers, they often picture a Christmas tree that stays green even through the cold winter. Larch, however, is a special exception.

In autumn, its needles turn a beautiful golden yellow. When winter arrives, the tree sheds all of its needles and remains bare until fresh green growth returns the following spring.

This unusual seasonal cycle makes larch one of the few deciduous conifers and creates spectacular golden forests every autumn.

Larch grows across cool temperate and cold regions and is one of the most cold-resistant conifer species. Some larches can survive temperatures as low as -40°C.

Growing under such harsh conditions means that larch develops relatively slowly, producing closely spaced growth rings and dense wood.

Its natural color ranges from pale yellow and orange-yellow to warm golden brown. Combined with its distinctive grain, these rich tones give larch a warm and attractive appearance.
 

One of the reasons larch offers good resistance to decay is its relatively dense structure and naturally high levels of resin and tannins. These characteristics help make the wood less favorable to fungi and insects.

Its dense structure also allows the heartwood to perform well in demanding environments, including prolonged exposure to moisture.

The foundations of Venice provide an interesting historical example. Archaeological studies of timber piles that have remained underwater for centuries have found that larch and alder are among the commonly identified wood species.

Larch is a versatile timber suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

It can be used for interior paneling, outdoor decking, fences, terraces, garden furniture, and playground equipment. Its strength and durability also make it suitable for shipbuilding and exterior cladding.

Because of its strong and durable heartwood, larch is also commonly selected for structural applications such as agricultural buildings.
 

The Savill Building in Windsor Great Park, England, is a remarkable example of larch used in modern timber architecture.

Its distinctive roof is formed by a gridshell structure made from numerous interwoven larch strips. Instead of relying on a conventional heavy roof structure, the timber members work together to support the entire curved surface.

The project demonstrates how the natural properties of larch can be combined with engineering and architectural design to create both structural strength and visual impact.

Large areas of larch plantations have been established in Siberia. In the eastern region alone, approximately one million hectares of commercially valuable larch plantations have been developed.
