Southern Yellow Pine itself is not toxic. However, to protect it from sun exposure, moisture, and termites, it undergoes a preservation process that includes the addition of non-toxic preservatives. At Bestwood, we use water-based preservatives such as ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) and MCA (Micronized Copper Azole), which are free from harmful chemicals like arsenic and chromium—substances banned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This ensures that Southern Yellow Pine is safely used in all environments.

ACQ is an eco-friendly, water-based preservative. Wood treated with ACQ takes on a darker green-brown hue, and without further coating, it will naturally weather to a silver-gray over time. MCA is one of the most common water-based preservatives used for Southern Yellow Pine. After treatment, the wood retains a lighter, brighter color, showcasing the beautiful natural grain. This preservative uses MicroPro™ technology to finely break down copper molecules, which then bond solidly within the wood’s structure, making the treatment highly effective in resisting copper loss. It also provides robust protection against termites and other insects, ensuring that the wood can withstand harsh environmental conditions.
